Appropriate uncertainty. Genuine replies often include hedging: "this might not apply if you're on the free plan," "I haven't tested this with X," "it depends a bit on whether your use case is Y." Over-confident, perfectly-stated claims read as marketing. Honest uncertainty reads as authentic.
Matching the thread's emotional register. If the post is frustrated ("we've been dealing with this for months and nothing works"), start with acknowledgment of that frustration rather than jumping to a solution. If the post is casual ("anyone use X? curious what people think"), match casual. The emotional register mismatch is one of the fastest community authenticity signals.
Disclosure done right. "I built [product] to solve this exact problem" lands very differently from hiding that you have a product connection. Reddit communities in particular are well-attuned to undisclosed promotion. The counterintuitive truth: disclosed affiliation with genuine, specific advice almost always outperforms undisclosed promotion with better writing.
Appropriate length. Community replies don't need to be comprehensive. They need to be useful to the specific person in the specific situation. A 4-sentence reply that directly addresses what someone asked performs better than a 12-sentence reply that tries to cover every angle.
The prompt engineering that actually helps
These are the AI reply prompts that produce usable community drafts — ones where the editing step mainly involves adding disclosure and adjusting to your voice rather than rewriting the whole thing.
Context injection: Paste the full thread — not just the title — as the input.
